In the summer of 2020, protesters with the Black Lives Matter movement went out and spoke against the violence towards communities of color done by police officers in Arizona and nationally. Arizona GOP are now using these protests for reason to criminalize protesters simply for using their personal right to protest.

If HB2309 and other anti-First Amendment bills were to pass, protesting would not be a protected constitutional right, especially in Black and Brown communities. If a police officer or anyone “perceived” to be law enforcement (including random counter-protestors with ‘Blue Lives Matter’ flags) felt threatened by actions taken by protesters, or if there was property damage they could then have the authority to detain and imprison anyone remotely involved in the protest for a minimum of six months.  The people detained do not need to be the ones who committed the felony for them to be charged.
