Shooting at party promoted on social media leaves 14-year-old dead, 8 others injured in Sunnyslope

Authorities said an altercation turned into a shooting at a party in a Phoenix strip mall.

PHOENIX — Several people were shot, including a 14-year-old girl who has died, after a shooting broke out during a party at a strip mall in the Sunnyslope neighborhood in Phoenix, police said.

The Phoenix Police Department said nine people were shot, including two who have life-threatening injuries. One of those victims has been pronounced dead.

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, police said roughly 100 people gathered for a party near 10th Avenue and Hatcher Road. Authorities said an altercation between multiple people turned into a shooting and "many rounds" were fired into the crowd.

The shooting apparently took place inside the strip mall, in the nearby parking lot and in the roadway.

Officials said the victims' dates of birth range from 1998 to 2004.

The 14-year-old girl, later identified as Emily Morgan, was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

Other victims include two adult women who have sustained life-threatening injuries, as well as five adult men and one teenage boy whose injuries are not life-threatening.

Police have not yet made any arrests and do not have information on a suspect. Authorities believe the shooter used a handgun in the incident.

Police said the shooting took place at a party promoted on social media.

"Recent trends show these parties spring up on social media platforms within a few hours of the gatherings and create a series of concerns in our community, the department said in an update on the case. "Those showing up have no idea who is holding the party and who might show up. These gatherings have led to shootings, drug use, property damage, and quality of life concerns for those living nearby."
